As we navigate the challenges of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) or Reverse SAD, it’s essential to have a daily routine that helps us stay motivated and uplifted. My personal mantra, which I also share with our Facebook group, is straightforward yet effective: Get up, get dressed, get out. Let’s explore how this simple approach can make a significant difference in your daily life.
Get Up: Embrace Your Natural Rhythm
The first step is all about listening to your body. I’m fortunate to have a flexible schedule, which allows me to stick to standard time. Here’s how my mornings typically unfold:
- Around 7:30 AM (daylight time), my partner heads off to work.
- Our puppy then needs a quick potty break, so I throw on some clothes over my nightwear and take them out.
- Afterward, I pour myself a cup of coffee and return to bed for another hour.
To outsiders, it might seem like I’m not up until after 9 AM, but by then, I’m well-rested and ready for a longer walk with the dog.
Get Dressed: Boost Your Mood and Productivity
Staying in your nightclothes all day can lead to feelings of lethargy and disconnection. So, rule number one: get properly dressed! Swapping one set of PJs for another doesn’t count. Dressing properly:
- Encourages you to complete your basic hygiene routine
- Allows you to run errands or have spontaneous visits with friends without feeling unprepared
- Means you can answer the doorbell confidently
- Helps you feel more alert and focused throughout the day
Getting dressed is a simple yet powerful way to boost your mood and productivity.
Get Out: Soak Up That Daylight
Lastly, making time for natural daylight is crucial. Aim for at least 30 minutes of daylight each day, preferably by stepping outside. Even on cloudy days, natural light can have a profound impact on your mood. Here are a few ways to incorporate daylight into your routine:
- Take a short walk: Whether it’s around the block or through a nearby park, getting outside can be incredibly uplifting.
- Sit by a window: If you can’t get outside, sitting by a window can still provide some benefits.
- Try a morning coffee break: Grab a cup of coffee and enjoy it outside, even if it’s just on your balcony or patio.
Last week sticking to this routine made all the difference. Although each day was gloomy and hard to get through by the end of it, I felt more energized and positive, despite the weather.
